When my children were small and I was exhausted sometimes I'd whip up excitement around what I called a "picnic tea". In essence this boiled down to things that didn't require cooking and could be assembled in minutes. Crudités were top of the bill along with hummus or other dips. Easy protein came from prawns, smoked salmon, or shredded smoked mackerel. Grapes, strawberries and other fruit followed. It was all good stuff; easy, packaged as a fun (the children usually cheered at the suggestion), and served on a blanket in the living room if it was cold outside, or in the garden when the sun was shining. We sat at the table this evening for our picnic tea. No-one cheered at my flagrantly lazy effort, but there were no objections raised either.
