As there was no recipe to follow this evening I might ordinarily have shared my own here. However, I have stopped short, as looks can be deceiving. While my gratin gave the impression of being delicious, it was definitely more miss than hit.

I had a pack of organic mutton sausage meat to play with and layered this with fried onions and thinly sliced potatoes topped with cream and sprinkled with parmesan.

On reflection, I've never had much luck making the perfect gratin in the past (or even one that's just properly cooked). Sadly tonight was no exception. Despite wafer thin potato slices, they remained considerably under done when the dish hit the table after 45 minutes in a pre-heated fan oven set at 180 degrees.

There was nothing for it but to scrap off the potato slices and gobble up the tasty meat, resulting in a carb light dish despite the original intentions.
